Ezra Greenspan, Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Chair in Humanities and professor of English, joined the SMU faculty in 2003 after an extensive teaching career at Tel Aviv University, Rutgers University and the University of South Carolina. He earned his Bachelor of Arts at Union College and his Master of Arts and doctorate at Brown University. Over the course of his career, he has written or edited nine scholarly books, including Walt Whitman and the American Reader (1990), George Palmer Putnam: Representative American Publisher (2000) and William Wells Brown: An African American Life (2015), as well as 16 articles in the fields of American studies and history of the book. He was founding co-editor of the journal Book History, which he continued to edit until 2015, and he has given more than 50 lectures and invited talks. Greenspan has been the recipient of fellowships from the Mellon Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities, among others. At SMU, he served as chair of the Department of English from 2006 to 2009. He retires as professor emeritus of English.
